Setting Limits . . . Step Out of Your Emotions - Step Back Into Control

Do you find yourself nagging, yelling, or threatening your children and using the same style of discipline that didn't work the first 25 times and still isn't working? Children thrive on structure. Established rules, rituals, and routines help children feel safe and secure. But they also need to be taught what is expected of them. The family/classroom rules and regulations need to be spelled out clearly and need to be enforced consistently. Learn how to step out of your emotions, make a plan, and step back into control!

The Challenging Child . . . Dealing With A Child Who Really "Pushes Your Buttons"

Are you feeling controlled by a challenging child ? As a matter of fact, does the entire family/classroom feel controlled by that child? Children with "difficult" temperaments can create such turmoil and conflict that everyone is adversely affected. Parents/teachers and children feel like failures, constantly frustrated and stressed out. It does not have to be this way. Learn about children's temperaments and how it affects behavior. Begin to correct this struggle. Learn how to identify and work with the characteristics of a temperamental personality.

Disciplining The "Defiant" Child

Some children have the mistaken Barbara Capaldo belief that the only way to belong and feel significant is to never allow anyone to have power over them. These children may exhibit stubborn, non-compliant, and defiant behaviors that are extremely challenging for the adults around them. This workshop will increase your knowledge of the causes of defiant behavior and improve your management skills and competence in dealing with child behavior problems.

Strategies For Managing A "Stubborn" Child

Stubbornness (negative persistence) is a temperament trait that plays a major role in power struggles. We need to teach stubborn children how to cooperate with us rather than use their energy to fight or resist. We also must understand how our own behavior can inspire power struggles. We will discuss what triggers stubborn behavior and what we can do to encourage a more flexible, cooperative attitude and end the power struggles.

A Child's ANGER! Allowing The Feeling . . . Managing The Behavior

As parents/teachers we need to understand that all children's emotions are natural and necessary for their health and self-esteem. We need to help children learn to act out their anger in ways that are not destructive or hurtful to themselves and others. This workshop will help you view all intense emotions in a more positive light and provide ways to teach children peaceful, respectful ways to express their angry feelings.

Another Difficult Day . . . Understanding Attention Disorders

Where does normal behavior leave off and ADD or ADHD begin? Join us for a discussion of the criteria necessary for a diagnosis, the possible causes, and common misconceptions about attention disorders. Learn how to recognize the symptoms of an attention disorder and how to get help for a child in question.

Getting Their Attention . . . Treatment Approaches For Attention Disorders

Learn how parents and schools can work together to reach and teach children with ADD and ADHD. We will discuss the possible behavior strategies, medications, and counseling components of a successful treatment program.

Self-Control & Self-Esteem . . . Helping Children With ADD/ADHD To "Feel Good" About Themselves

Children can develop poor self-esteem as a result of the combined negative experiences they accumulate from their home and school environments. A preliminary study on children with ADD/ADHD shows significantly lower self-esteem than their supposedly "normal" peers. We will discuss strategies that empower children with a sense of acceptance, competence, and self-worth.

A Discipline Training Program

Effective discipline is the cornerstone of a good relationship with children. This program is being offered to assist parents and teachers in their individual ability to set firm and effective limits with children of all ages. Through exercises and group discussion, participants will be able to evaluate their present ability to set limits and will be given specific feedback about how to set limits more effectively in the future.

Power Struggles & Tantrums

This major challenge for parents/teachers and children consumes time and energy for all parties. Join us for this workshop as we discuss how to strike the right balance between a child's independence and adult control. We will share how to avoid the struggles and tame the tantrums.

Teaching The Active/Impulsive Child Self-Control

This workshop focuses on children who manage to drive their parents/teachers to distraction by their "out-of-control" activity level and their "act first, think later" approach to life. These whirlwinds of raw energy and excitability manage to wreak havoc wherever they go. Because of the nature of their temperament, they need "special" handling and a big measure of understanding. Learn ways to help them use their gift of energy constructively, helping them develop self-control while giving their self-image a boost.

Firm Limits And Effective Consequences For The School-Age Child

As children reach those "middle years" they learn new skills and have the abilities to do them well. They continually test limits as they explore rules and values and learn how to take care of themselves. Learn how to encourage responsibility and decision-making, while setting and enforcing limits that will stand up to the "test".

Surviving A Child's Adolescence . . . Dealing With "THE ATTITUDE"

Adolescence is an unpredictable and complicated time in a child's life. It can be a time of extreme moods and behaviors, and a time of questioning authority and testing limits. In this workshop you will learn how to communicate with a teenager in a way that builds trust and inspires honesty and openness. You will also learn how to effectively deal with the infamous teen "ATTITUDE", make rules that will be respected, handle confrontation, and balance responsibility with freedom.

Teaching Pre-Schoolers Self-Control

Establishing structure and firm limits are essential for children to learn self-control (which is the goal of discipline). Learn age-appropriate discipline techniques that promote self-control and encourages healthy self-esteem.

Handling Aggression In Young Children

Aggression in small children is a major concern for many parents and teachers. This workshop will address why young children have issues like biting, hitting, kicking, etc. We will explore why it must be dealt with and how you can teach a child the skills he/she needs to handle situations differently.

Discipline For Toddlers

Are you being confronted with the terrible twos? You can effectively manage the day-to-day dramas of a toddler! In the second year of life a child walks and talks the "independence game" but remains very dependent upon you. Find out how you can help a child gain independence and maintain a healthy self-esteem. Learn how to match your expectations with the capabilities of a child this age. Toddlers really can be terrific!

The Trouble With Talking Back . . . Teaching Children RESPECT!

Whatever happened to "honor thy mother and father"? Are kids today really less respectful than when we were kids? Join us for this thoughtful discussion about the value of respect. Teaching a child courtesy, politeness, self-respect, and consideration for others is important during the early years of their life. A strong sense of respect for self and others is an essential tool you can give a child. They will need it when dealing with the many influences they face in our complex society.

Helping Children Cope With Their Anxieties & Fears

Children are not immune to the negative effects of stress. Gone are the so-called "carefree days of childhood", replaced by the "problem-filled world" of adults. Children are experiencing an increase in stress-related health problems as well as depression, anger, fears, anxieties, lack of goals and poor self-esteem at a rate unknown to past generations. This workshop focuses on recognizing stress in children and helping them develop the skills to cope with the negative effects of anxieties and fears.

Birth Order . . . How It Influences A Child's Behavior

Whether a child is the only child, first-born, middle child, or the "last but not least" in a family, the birth order placement has a powerful influence in shaping the kind of person he or she will be. In this workshop we will talk about some "stereotypical" personality traits and behaviors attributed to the various birth order positions. We will also discuss strategies to avoid the potentially damaging effects of "typecasting" while focusing on building a healthy self-concept.

Developing Positive Sibling Relationships

Life with more than one child can be stormy, to say the least. Many of us experienced this competition when we were kids; many of us experience it now. Sibling rivalry - managing it seems impossible! In this workshop we will discuss strategies you should and shouldn't use; behaviors you should and shouldn't allow. We will focus on how to minimize the rivalry and increase the good feelings between siblings.

Raising Responsible And Capable Children . . . A Family Working Together

Research shows that children who have strong perceptions of their capabilities, contributions, and skills are less likely to get involved in the problems plaguing our children today (Drugs and Alcohol Abuse, Crime and Vandalism, Teenage Pregnancy, Teenage Suicide, Lack of Motivation, and Achievement). Learn how to help your child develop these self-empowering perceptions and skills and become a more responsible, capable, and contributing member of the family and society.

Promoting "Healthy" Self-Esteem In Children

Children's lives are affected by what they believe about themselves. A healthy, positive self-image is one of the greatest assets they can possess. It can help them make it through their most difficult times. Because their beliefs about who they are begin forming when they are very young, we as parents/teachers play a vital role in how they see themselves. Learn how to show acceptance, understanding, and appreciation in ways THEY can understand. Learn new and creative approaches to help them believe in themselves and accept who they are.

Teaching Children How To Solve Their Own Problems

If we want children to be strong, independent, and able to stand up for themselves, they must be able to solve their own problems. Most adults step in too quickly and rob children of an opportunity to feel capable. We must stop doing for children what they can do for themselves. In this workshop you will learn how to teach children to communicate assertively (to ask for what they want), understand another person's point of view, evaluate their own behavior, think of alternative solutions, and make realistic plans.

Helping Your Child Get The Most Out Of School

You know your child is smart, but his/her performance at school is mediocre at best. Children today seem to be offended by the notion of hard work, become easily discouraged, and are quick to give up. This workshop teaches parents how to help children become more motivated in school and appreciate the value of their education now and for their future success. It teaches how to encourage effort, initiative, perseverance, and responsibility. This workshop will also focus on improving communication between parents and teachers.

From Conflict To Cooperation . . . Dealing With "Difficult" People

No longer do you need to hide under your desk or behind your couch when a difficult person enters your space. In this workshop you will learn coping techniques to use with difficult people, from the aggressive hostile "bully" to the ever-so-quiet unresponsive "clam". Learn how to deal with gossips, back-stabbers, and know-it-alls. Experience an immediate improvement in the quality of your life at home and at work.

Assertive Communication . . . How To Ask For What You Want And Get Your Needs Met

How we interact with others can be rewarding or a source of considerable stress. A lot of this stress can be alleviated by learning how to communicate effectively. We will discuss ways to show sensitivity to the needs of others, effective listening skills, and how to assertively communicate our own needs.

Stress Management . . . Preventing Burnout

Do you ever feel like a hamster on a wheel, running so fast, yet not getting anywhere? Many of us feel overwhelmed by the continual stresses of daily life, and our fast pace can zap our energy and our passion for life itself. Come and take a time out to evaluate the current state of your life. You'll leave feeling renewed, with a stronger sense of self.

You're Not Alone . . . A Workshop For Single Parent

Single parent parenting affects every aspect of life . . . physical, emotional, social, and economic. It may mean half the earning power, twice as much responsibility, and twice as many demands on your time and energy. If you feel guilty and inadequate, you give your children the message that they are being somehow "shortchanged". Learn how to let go of the need to be both mother and father to your children and learn new ways of feeling more empowered as a single parent.

The Power of Words . . . Communication Skills To Change Your Life
|   | In life there will always be conflicts . . . most often due to miscommunication. Whether at home or at work, our relationships may become strained and hostile creating a negative environment for all. Learn how to effectively communicate your most powerful feelings and concerns while remaining calm and confident. Use your words to resolve conflicts, deal with unacceptable behaviors, and "bad" attitudes. Creating a positive environment starts with YOU! |
Dealing With Challenging Behaviors During Times of Crisis
|   | Children often exhibit signs of stress and anxiety in ways that adults find challenging. They may withdraw and act fearful or clingy, or act out in an aggressive manner. In this workshop, we will focus on these challenging behaviors and discipline strategies that promote both self-esteem and self-control. |
Raising Confident Girls
|   | As girls transition from early childhood to mid-childhood, their self-esteem seems to plummet. As we see the "I can do anything" attitude disappear, it saddens and concerns us. As adults, we can help foster that sense of inner confidence; helping our girls feel good about themselves and their abilities. Join us for this powerful workshop to learn how to go beyond mere compliments and praise to teach skills that encourage and empower. |
